THE HUMBLE ENTRY

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, humble, and mounted on a donkey, even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

  • As Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey, the crowd placed their coats and palm branches on the ground before Him. They did this in worship and celebration of who they thought He was: their earthly king who would take care of their earthly problems. Their understanding of both Him and their problems fell severely short of the truth. Jesus did not come conquering on a horse as an earthly king for their earthly issues. He came humbly on a donkey as the sacrifice for mankind’s greatest issue: all are deserving of the wrath of God because all have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23). The goal of “The Humble Entry” is to help us look past the coats and palm branches and focus on that which is on the backs of every donkey: the cross. Jesus entered Jerusalem that day to sacrifice Himself on the cross in our place so that we would be saved through Him from God’s wrath. Let us rejoice for this reason! Our just and heavenly King has humbly come to bring us salvation (Zechariah 9:9)!
